The Hague

Capital of Holland, The Hague was initially a hunting preserve of the counts of Holland and was referred to as the count's enclosure, or "hedge," the word from which its Dutch name is derived. It was the capital of the Dutch republic in the 17th and 18th centuries but was not granted the rights of a city until the Napoleonic period. Today it is the home of the Dutch parliament (housed in the historic Binnenhof castle).

The city with its medieval palaces, 17 century almshouses, royal palaces and floral parks, is full of surprises.

There is a host of art galleries and museums including the Mauritshuis Royal Art Gallery, which presents works by Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Rubens. Also noteworthy are the Gemeente, Bredius, Modern Art, and Mesdag museums. Many of the government buildings are of historical interest.

You have a choice of three hotels in the city. The luxurious 4* Bel Air, the 3* superior Mercure and the 3* Novotel. All three have rooms with private facilities, colour TV and direct dial-telephone. They all have a number of function rooms, so are suitable for groups of all sizes.
