Ladies Festivals in Ypres
Ypres or Ieper was an important textile centre in the Middle Ages, exporting vast quantities of linen to England. The city was totally destroyed during the First World War and has been rebuilt in its medieval style to reflect its former glory. It is an ideal place for a weekend break as there is so much to do and see.
Visit the Market Square, the Cloth Hall which is 100 metres long and forms a whole with the Belfry which is 70 metres high, St Martins Cathedral, the Ramparts, The Flanders Field Museum and the Menin Gate. The latter is the most famous British war memorial of the First World War. Built by Sir Reginald Bloomfield, this gate bears the names of 54,896 missing soldiers. The Last Post is sounded each evening at 8:00pm, as it has been every day since 1926.
